Melania Trump has announced the release of a new digital collectible called Man on the Moon, which celebrates the moon landing 54 years ago.
The NFTs are available for purchase at $75 each. They represent the event involving NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong landing on the moon during a spaceflight led by Michael Collins on July 20, 1969.
“I am proud to celebrate the great achievement of these astronauts and remain inspired by American ingenuity,” said Trump.
The digital collectible displays an image of the astronauts and includes the famous quote from Armstrong when he took his first steps on the moon’s surface, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Trump also said the NFT would contain an embedded audio file, a “surprise” that collectors must “unlock.”
Trump’s involvement within the crypto space is not new. She entered the NFT market in January 2022 during the peak of the NFT craze.
However, her previous NFT release, the Head of State Collection, gained little traction. Experts conclude that the digital portrait of Trump, which was the subject of the NFTs, was likely bought by Trump herself or someone associated with her after failing to find another buyer.
The former first lady later released a collection of Christmas NFTs and revealed an artist’s watercolor painting titled “Melania’s Vision,” which highlights her eyes.
For the last Fourth of July, Trump released a collection of Americana-themed digital art called “The 1776 Collection” with a price tag of $50.
The collection features images of iconic American landmarks such as Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell, accompanied by patriotic music. According to Trump’s official statement, each NFT in the collection was designed to celebrate the fundamental ideals upon which America was founded.
“The 1776 Collection of artwork draws inspiration from several iconic landmarks of our nation, which I had the privilege of visiting during the time I served as first lady,” Trump said.
According to Trump’s office, a portion of the 1776 Collection sale price would be donated to foster children.
The Man on the Moon NFT features a famous image captured during NASA’s historic mission to the moon. The photograph, taken by Armstrong, portrays Aldrin positioned close to the lunar module Eagle on the moon’s surface.
While NASA’s images are typically not subject to copyright and are commonly shared for educational and informational purposes, the space agency has established certain limitations regarding NFT usage.
“NASA is not approving any merchandising applications involving Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), as they are not consistent with the categories of products the Agency is approved to merchandise,” said the federal agency in its Regulations for Merchandising Requests.
Additionally, NASA’s Media Usage Guidelines explicitly say that the agency “does not wish for its images to be used for these purposes.”
Before Trump, others have also included NASA imagery for their NFTs. In April 2021, Anicorn Watches introduced the first NASA-branded NFT, which fetched over $41,000.
Interestingly, the artwork can be used to claim a physical “secret timepiece” created by NASA logo designer Richard Danne, as reported by Dezeen.
Danne and Blackburn, the design studio led by Danne, was crucial in NASA’s rebranding during the 1970s, being the one to design the NASA wordmark.
Anicorn NFTs come with digital content, including video, sound clips and the previously undisclosed watch design. As of now, NASA has yet to address either of the NFT products.
